Restored Sites

The Kays and Kears site at Blaenavon was worked by Celtic Energy between 1995 and 1997 as a land reclamation/coal recovery scheme in co-operation with Torfaen Borough Council.

A scenic country park has been created known as the Garn Lakes. The site has been restored to a mix of public open space and opportunities for building development.

Restoration of the Park Slip site commenced in 1990 when a joint initiative was launched between British Coal Opencast and Glamorgan Wildlife Trust (subsequently renamed The Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales) to establish a Nature Park on the restored opencast site.

Restoration and rehabilitation has largely been successful, with the reserve supporting a range of uncommon species, particularly invertebrates, whilst also being notable and actively managed for breeding lapwings. The Reserve was given a Prince of Wales award in 1992 and, together with Celtic Energy, a Rural Wales Award from the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales in November 2002.

The Ffos Las site at Trimsaran was worked between 1983 and 1997 with restoration being completed by 2000. The site is being developed by Walters Group as the UK’s first new National Hunt racecourse development in 80 years. The racecourse consists of a 1 mile 4 furlong oval track with provision for National Hunt and Flat Racing.

Gilfach Iago site near Saron finished coaling in 1997 with restoration to agriculture and woodland being completed by 1999.

Roads and other rights of way have yet to be constructed.
